The peaceful cohabitation of strangers in a confined space is considered the starting point of civilisation. The principle of the city is sketched in 26 sequences, from the megacities of Uruk and Babylon — which the oldest myths compared to paradise — to the terror of Aššur, and to the “city in us.” The film will be followed by a panel discussion with sociologist and author Richard Sennett, architect David Chipperfield and author and film director Alexander Kluge, moderated by Gareth Evans, film curator at the Whitechapel Gallery. The discussion will draw an arc from the founding of the ancient cities of Mesopotamia all the way through to the developments of megacities and the complex urban conglomerations of the 21st century.
